On January 30, 1938, the late Willie and Emma Lee Etier of Mangham, Louisiana were blessed with a long awaited daughter, whom they named Verlene.
At a young age, the family moved to Monroe, Louisiana. She was baptized and joined Mount Calvary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend W.M. Mathis. She remained a dedicated member under Reverend Willie B. Patrick and Reverend Glenn W. McKinney. She served as the church treasurer under the leadership of Reverend McKenney, until her health began to decline.
She attended grade school at Little Flower Academy. Her kind and giving spirit led her to return to school to become a certified nurse’s assistant. She worked as a private sitter for thirty years.
On April 13, 1958, she united in holy matrimony with Roosevelt Douglas, Sr. To this union, four children were born. Her loving and nurturing personality led many to call her mom.
She leaves to mourn: her husband of 66 years, Roosevelt Douglas, Sr.; three daughters, Deborah Coleman (Roy), Janis Smith (William), and Patricia Douglas; one son, Roosevelt Douglas, Jr.; one niece that she raised, Terri Douglas; two sisters, Martha Phillips (Foster), Deborah Moore; two brothers, Charles Moore and Darren Moore; six grandchildren, Jamela Smith, Kourtney Hampton, Tyeshia Coleman, Korre Banks (Chris), Akel Smith, and Myciah Douglas; five great- grandchildren, Jayda Ross, Madison Ross, Kiyah Hampton, Chrisopher Banks, Jr., and Kyndal Banks; two godsons, Tommie Jenkins and Jessie Jackson; one god daughter, Tyrese Baker; two stepgrandchildren, Dantasia Everson, and Nicole Joseph; and a host of nieces, nephews, church family, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Etier and Emma Lee; brothers, Euriah Etier and Henry Carl Etier; and sister, Felicia Moore Wesley.
