Verda Mae McGhee Obituary

Verda McGhee, 81, passed away peacefully the morning of Tuesday, December 24, 2024, with the love of her family surrounding her at Glenwood Medical Center.

Verda’s life was a testament to the power of love and community. Born November 24, 1943, to Joe Andrew’s and Nora McGhee, she spent most of her life in Monroe, Louisiana, raising her children and building a supportive community of friends who became like family.

A loving mother and homemaker, Verda was mother to many. As a homemaker, she took great pride in caring for her family, ensuring that her loved ones always had a place to come together, find
comfort, and share in laughter. Her nurturing spirit and generosity of heart were evident in the countless ways she supported those around her. She had an impact on each person she interacted with.

She was funny, full of joy and wisdom, and a ball of fire that showed us what can be accomplished with determination and persistence. She lived her life to the fullest; she loved to gather around with her family and close friends and listen to music and play cards. That’s how she spent her life. Her greatest joys and accomplishments were the love of her children and grandchildren. Yet, even amidst the challenges life brought her way, Verda never wavered in her compassion for others. She was a woman of great resilience, and in the end, she found peace. Her legacy is one of unyielding kindness and generosity.

She was preceded in death by her son, Donnie McGee; three brothers, Earl, James, and Willie M. McGee; one sister, Ethel McGee; and both of her parents.

Verdie is survived by her seven sons, Willie McGee, Terry McGee (Yvette), Darren McGee, Clifton McGee (Monique), Tony McGee (Donisha), Martez McGee, and Sherrick McGee; two daughters, Tonya McGee Jones (Dexter) and Yolanda McGee; sixteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and three godchildren she took under her wing when their mother passed, Lemond Howard, Relunda Thomas, and Afrika Howard; her best friend, Ygunda Reneé Brown; as well as numerous other family members and friends. She will be greatly missed by all.
