Thomas Edward Wood

Thomas Edward Wood, age 83, entered his heavenly home on October 31, 2023.

Thomas was born the sixth of eight children to Etta (Fitzgerald) and Floyd Wood, Sr. He was born June 6, 1940, in Natchez, Mississippi. His brother, Willie, always teased him about being the sixth child born in the sixth month on the sixth day. They were so close that they never hung up without saying, “I love you”. He moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, as a young man. He graduated from Liddell High School in Fayette, Misissippi. After high school, he attended Alcorn State University for one year. Thomas decided to start his career as a unionized longshoreman, where he was active in ILA and worked for 38 years.

Being very active in the union required Thomas to travel to many conferences. In 1997, while at a conference, he met his beloved wife, Carol Coffey. On February 14, 1998., Thomas and Carol united in holy matrimony. Thomas and Carol temporarily moved to reside in Ohio and Mississippi until Carol retired and they moved back to Monroe, Louisiana. While in Monroe, Thomas, became a devoted member of Rose of Sharon Baptist Church. He enjoyed being active in the retiree chapter of the union, local politics, community service, and breakfast at McDonald’s with his retired friends.

He leaves to cherish his memories: devoted wife of 25 years, Carol Wood; three children, Angelee Wood Smith (Reco) of Atlanta, Georgia, Melvin Wood (LaZander) of New Orleans, Louisiana, and LeNeice Coffey of Arlington, Texas; nine grandchildren, Kierra, Cierra, Thomas, Caitlin, Trinity, Leyla, Maya, Kai, and Bailey; three great-grandchildren; brother, Willie Wood of San Francisco, California; and a host of nieces and nephews who he had special relationships with.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd Sr. and Etta; and his siblings, Florida Coates, Lillian Noble, Floyd Wood, Jr., Percy Wood, Otis Wood, and Charlie Wood.
