Shakunla Currie Obituary

The quality of a man’s life is not measured by the number of years, but by the lives he touched.

Shakunla “Coochie” Marcette Currie was born September 20, 1970, to the union of the late Reverend Horace Curry, Sr., and Florida Simmons Curry. She was the second oldest of seven children.

Shakunla transitioned from this earthly journey to be with her heavenly father on Thursday, June 3, 2021. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Saint Paul Baptist Church in Girard, Louisiana, under the leadership of Reverend Willie Minor, Jr., where she sang in the choir and was the director.

After graduating from Little Flower Academy and Ouachita High School in 1989, she attended Southern University and the University of Louisiana at Monroe. After a year, she decided to attend Unitech Training Academy and received certifications in Medical Office Assistance, Phlebotomy, and Administration Assistance, and was valedictorian of her class. She worked in the Ouachita Parish Schools dietary department.

She was preceded in death by her father, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She leaves to cherish her legacy: three sons, Jerry Edward Curry, William Drew Lewis, and Jaelin Makel’ Lewis, all of Monroe, Louisiana; her mother, Florida Simmons Curry; two sisters, Loretta Curry and Benita Curry, both of Monroe, Louisiana; four brothers, Horace Currie, Jr. (Titra) of Summerville, South Carolina, Samuel Curry (Dia) of Forney, Texas, Isaac Curry of Monroe, Louisiana, and Jimmie Roberson of Fort Worth, Texas; nieces, Chedorlamer Ellis (Malcolm) of Monroe, Louisiana, Zuri (Victor) of Austin, Texas, Kristen Currie and Dae’Zhane’ L. Fields Currie, both of Summerville, South Carolina, Sydney Armani Curry of Forney, Texas, Laporsia Pickens (Jace) of Montgomery, Alabama, and Ava Currie; nephews, Horace Currie III (Stephanie) of Texas, Joseph Currie of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Kameron Ellis of Monroe, Louisiana, Ashton and Kollin, and Caneito Jr., of Austin, Texas; aunts, Florden Roberson, Ruby Watts, Barbara Simmons, and Shirley Lewis, all of Monroe, Louisiana, Mary Alexander of Rayville, Louisiana, Ceola Johnson and Earlean Harris of Tucson, Arizona, and Joe Ann Bailey of California; uncles, James Simmons of Monroe, Louisiana, John L.
