Roberta Jones Stout was born on September 27, 1927, in Delhi, Louisiana to the late Frank Jones, Jr., and Ocola Alexander Jones. Mrs. Roberta Stout accepted Christ in 1939, at the age of 12, baptized in the Bayou Mason River. She joined New Zion Baptist Church, under the leadership of Reverend I. J. Bradley. Mrs. Stout was a faithful member of New Zion Baptist Church as an usher in her earlier years. She was later made a Mother of the church and served until she went home to be with her Lord and Savior.
Mrs. Stout attended St. John High School in Richland Parish, Louisiana and graduated in 1944. Roberta attended numerous nutrition classes when she worked for the State of Louisiana as a Nutritional Specialist. While in this role, she would travel throughout several state parishes teaching families how to purchase, prepare, and feed their families nutritious meals. Roberta enjoyed her job and excelled in this position while helping members of her community and other communities until she retired. After retiring, she accepted a temporary position as a clerk in the State Employment Office.
Roberta’s most important achievement in life was teaching her children about Christ. She taught them to love each other and about forgiveness. Her lessons included treating others the way they wanted Jesus to treat them. Sticking together was of the utmost importance. She would always remind them to put something back for a rainy day and to share with others even if they couldn’t pay you back.
Her family will miss the berry cobblers, gar fish with gravy, the big homemade biscuits with preserves, and fried corn she prepared on numerous occasions (especially for her grands).
Mrs. Stout met and married the love of her life, Mr. Tommie Lee Stout, Sr., on September 1, 1946. Together, they raised four children: Pearl Stout Campbell of Las Vegas, Nevada, Girtha Stout of Texas City, Texas, Tommie Lee Stout, Jr. (Betty) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Ella Stout Spalding (Joseph) of Delhi, Louisiana. Tommie and Roberta honored their wedding vows until his death on May 23, 1990. Mrs. Stout was also preceded in death by her parents and six brothers.
To cherish her memories, Roberta leaves: four children; six grandchildren, Johnna Weatherspoon of Las Vegas, Nevada, Marcus Stout of Morena Valley, California, Ashlee Stout of Texas City, Texas, Kristi Williams of Rowlett, Texas, Stefani Williams Barton (Johnny) of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Brittany Stout of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; seven siblings; six sisters-in-law whom she truly loved as sisters; one brother-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. In addition, Mr. Lloyd Northern, Mr. Samuel London, and Mr. Michael Reid came to know her as “Mom.” She called them her “sons” and loved them dearly.
Roberta’s legacy of love will live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
