Reverend Amos Heckard, Jr., was born on April 27, 1951, in Extension, Louisiana, to the late Amos and Georgia Heckard. He peacefully departed this life on Sunday, May 10, 2026, at Franklin Medical Center in Winnsboro, Louisiana.
At an early age, Amos accepted Christ at Locust Hill Baptist Church, where his foundation in faith was established. His spiritual journey later continued at Greater Saint Matthew Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, under the leadership of Reverend Gusta G. Booker, Sr. There, he served faithfully as an usher and a devoted deacon. In later years, he returned to his home church, Locust Hill Baptist Church, under the leadership of Reverend George Lavender, Jr., where he served diligently as a deacon for 20 years. In 1994, Amos answered the call of God upon his life to preach the Gospel. He delivered his first sermon in July of that year, titled “The Power of Prayer.” In 1997, he was elected Pastor of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Wisner, Louisiana, where he faithfully preached and taught the Word of God. Reverend Heckard’s love for the church, his family, and above all, his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, was evident in all that he did.
Amos was a proud graduate of the class of 1969 at Franklin Parish High School in Winnsboro, Louisiana. He built a distinguished career, serving Tennessee Gas Pipeline Company, El Paso Energy, and Kinder Morgan for a total of forty-one and a half years.
Amos made history as the first African American elected official in the town of Wisner, serving honorably as Justice of the Peace for seven years. He also served his community as a member of the Franklin Parish School Board. He faithfully maintained a masonic membership in Scott A. Lewis Lodge No. 176, Free and Accepted Masons, PHA, for fifty years.
On May 22, 1971, Amos was united in Holy Matrimony to Nancie. Their loving union was blessed with three cherished children.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Amos Heckard; three brothers, Esau Heckard, Troy Heckard, and Granville Heckard; and one sister, Eliza Heckard.
His legacy will forever be cherished by his devoted wife of fifty-five years, Nancie; children, Amosha (Isaac) of Monroe, Louisiana, Ricky (Christel) of Richlands, North Carolina, and Derek (LaToya) of Pearl, Mississippi; four grandchildren, Ricky, Jr., Miranda, Trenton, and Italia; and one great-grandchild, Eren.
He also leaves to cherish his memory four sisters: Georgie Sims of Monroe, Louisiana; Dorothy Bullock of Winnsboro, Louisiana; Sandra Tolliver of St. Louis, Missouri; and Brenda Heckard of Extension, Louisiana; one brother, Archie Heckard of Lake Charles, Louisiana; a brother in Christ and dear friend of over fifty years, Andrew Jones of Houston, Texas; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.
