Mother May’s Journey

Mother Viola May was born June 24, 1932 in Richland Parish to Robert “Bob” and Amanda King-Harris.

Mother May lived a full and productive life. She confessed her love for Christ at the age of fourteen and started her walk with the Lord. She joined the Union Valley Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Walter Wroten. She served as a choir and eventually choir President, and later a Mother of the Church.

Mother May married Jessie Green, who preceded her in death. To this union, four children were born. She later married Walter James, who preceded her in death. No children were born into this union. She then later married Roosevelt May, who also preceded her in death. No children were born to this union.

Mother May attended Richland Parish Training School. She worked as a seamstress for most of her life. She also worked at Delhi Manufacturing for 20 years. She also worked 11 years as a displayer for Home Interior Designs.

Mother May departed this life on March 14, 2020 in Monroe, Louisiana. Left to cherish her memory: three children, Barbara Johnson-Martin of Monroe, Louisiana; Dorothy Jones of Monroe, Louisiana; and James Green of Delhi, Louisiana; three sisters, Izola (Kado) Bruce of Phoenix, Illinois; Olivia McCoy of Delhi, Louisiana; and Gloria Sparrow of Delhi, Louisiana; eight brothers, C.C. (Christine) Bruce, Robert Harris, Freddie (Shevon) Harris, Lionel (Patsy) Harris, and Larry (Audrey) Harris, all of Delhi, Louisiana; Sam (Christine) Harris of Epps, Louisiana; Bobby (Patricia) Harris of Alcea, Tennessee; and Daniel (Marie) Harris of Swartz, Louisiana; eight grandchildren, and a host of great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, one child, Joyce Ann Green; six brothers, Leon Harris, Wright Bruce, Jr., Willie Bruce, George Harris, Charles Harris, and Rufus Harris.
