On September 29, 1934, the late George and Carrie Mays were blessed with a beautiful daughter, whom they named Mary Lou. Mary accepted Christ at an early age. She was a faithful member of the Little Dee Missionary Baptist Church where she served as an usher for many years.
Mary was a very strong independent hard working women that had the knowledge, skills, and capabilities to be a very successful homemaker. She was a gardener with a green thumb who shared her crops with people far and near. She took upon herself to be the dentist in the family who pulled teeth when they were loose, the electrician in the family when the electric outlet would not work properly, the plumber in the family when there was a busted pipe that needed repaired, and a carpenter who made minor repairs around her home in her early years.
Mary loved God, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with all her heart. She was a person that would
go over and beyond the call of duty to provide for her family. She enjoyed life; cooking, gardening, canning, driving, fishing, laughing at jokes, and most of all spending time with her grand and great grandchildren. She always encouraged them to stay with the Lord and get a good education. She was a very kind, compassionate, patient, courageous, bold, hard worker, and a woman of faith. She was a wealth of family history and a conveyor of legacies by wanting to see all of her great and great grandchildren. She would travel to see them and hold them. She was the matriarch of the family and the last of the George Mays clan. In her final hours, she was alert, active, fully aware and talking on the phone. She was the
backbone of her family.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, George and Carrie Mays; siblings, George Mays Jr., Rosie Downs, Frank Mays, Lou Rea Mays, James Mays, Sr., Candice Reddick , and one son Leroy Mays.
Mary leaves to cherish her memories; five daughters, Linda Mays-Logan (Willie), Mer Rouge, Louisiana; Lois Mays, Bastrop, Louisiana; Gloria Mays, Monroe, Louisiana; Sandra Dowles, Mer Rouge, Louisiana; Wanda Mays, Mer Rouge, Louisiana; one son Tommy Mays, Mer Rouge, Louisiana, and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
