“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.”
Psalm 91:1-3
Mae Bertha Taylor was born on February 28, 1945, to the late Samuel and Rosa Taylor. She confessed hope in Jesus Christ at an early age. She was always a faithful member of Friendship Baptist Church where she sang in the choir for many years.
Mae was a giving and loving person, reaching out to the community. For instance, if someone had nothing, she went out of her way to help. When the weather was hot, she would take her fan to them for them to have. She was a compassionate person, buying groceries for those in need.
She graduated from Lillie High School in Bernice, Louisiana. She worked at Bernice Sewing Factory and Pilgrim’s Pride, renamed Conagra, where she retired after thirty years.
She met the love of her life, Vehornable “Buddy” Johnson. She cherished twenty-seven wonderful years with her husband. Although she mothered many, she has one biological daughter, Pastor Mary Johnikin (Stanley), who preceded her in death on October 20, 2023, and Zion Johnikin, her only granddaughter.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her daughter, Pastor Mary Johnikin of Monroe, LA; granddaughter, Zion Johnikin of Monroe, LA; sister, Nora (Julius) Taylor Dawson of Bernice, LA; one brother, Vernon (Gail) Taylor of Dallas, TX; niece, Lakeal (Derono) Wright; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, friends, and many others who loved her dearly.
