Johnny Powell, Jr. Obituary

Johnny Lee Powell, Jr., was born August 4, 1943, to the union of the late Callie Mae McMillian and Johnny Lee Powell, Sr. He was the baby of seven and the last to depart from this Earth at 80 years of age.

Johnny’s life was filled with love and laughter, taking his wife, May Lou, out on the town, cooking lavish meals, wiping his truck down every day, and making sure his FAMILY was good.

Growing up in El Dorado, Arkansas, then later moving to Truxno, Louisiana (Marion), and later to West Monroe, Louisiana. Johnny attend church at St. Paul Baptist Church of Columbia, Louisiana. He graduated in 1960 from Boley High School, where he played football and went on to attend the Army on February 28, 1967, and served through 1969, where he went to his first WAR. He was employed by Century Ready-Mix and Woodstock Lumber while retired he went on to marry the love of his life Mary McGinnis on June 1, 2007.

Johnny departed from this life on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at Glenwood Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his mother, and father Callie and Johnny; two daughters, Phyllis Roberson and Alice Smith; two sons, Glen Russell, Gregory Robinson; six siblings, Ruthie Kendrix, Gracie Glass, Willie T. Cobbs, Willie A. Bowie, L.C. Karo, and Velma Jean Jackson.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his lovely wife of seventeen years, Mary McGinnis Powell; two daughters, Johnetta L. Smith and Shayla Scott; two sons, Eric A. Powell and Jonathon Scott; two stepchildren, Cedric McGinnis (Lakasha), and Fredrick McGinnis (Tamara); twenty-two grandchildren, including two special grands, Cednecia McGinnis and Cedmaji McGinnis; twelve great-grandchildren; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
