Isaiah 41:10,
“Fear not, for I am with you: be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
At 9:15 AM on Thursday, April 6, 1939, a new addition was born into the household of Robert Sewell and Willie May Williams. He was named John Henry Sewell. He was called home to rest on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at the War Veterans Home in Monroe, LA, at the age of 86.
As a child, he excelled in school and attended Bright Oak Elementary and Monroe Colored High (Carroll High now). He enjoyed playing baseball, eating crawfish, and eating homemade apple butter.
After graduating high school, he joined the Army and served 28 years and achieved the highest rank of a non-commissioned officer, Command Sergeant Major E9. In addition, he married Sarah Lee Sewell on May 30, 1963. Shortly before retiring from the military, he was called to preach and became an ordained minister. He was a member of Bright Oak Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Edward Williams, Jr. He was appointed the pastor of St. Mary #2 Baptist Church.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his three daughters, Patricia Heckard (Lee Dell Heckard) of Monroe, LA, Aretha Sewell Freeman (Roger Freeman) of Houston, TX, and Sharon Sewell (Ronald Hampton) of Augusta, GA; 18 siblings preceded him in death and four surviving siblings are Sam Sewell of Houston, TX, Eugene Sewell of North Monroe, LA, Frank Sewell of Monroe, LA, and Joyce Lloyd of Cleveland, OH; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.
