Gertrude E. Guice Obituary

On November 18, 1934, a soft-spoken baby girl was born to Roosevelt Sr. and Emma Washington in Tallulah, Louisiana.

She confessed Christ at an early age at Union Baptist Missionary Baptist Church, Montrose Plantation under the leadership of T.C. Cable, then under the leadership of Reverend Robert Allen.

She spiritually served and interceded as a mother at New Light M.B. Church until her health failed.

Gertrude graduated from Madison Parish Training School in 1954. After graduation she was employed at Myrette’s Beauty Salon in Tallulah. She met the love of her life, Robert Guice, and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada. They were united in holy matrimony and to this union three children were born: Garland, Steve and Sandra. In March 1970, Gertrude’s husband was killed in a terrible car accident that left her to take care of three injured children. She left Las Vegas and moved back to Tallulah in May 1970 to live with her parents .

Gertrude was employed at Wright Elementary as a food technician for 35 years and retired in 2010. Gertrude could make the BEST peach cobbler that would melt in your mouth.

After retirement she enjoyed working at home with her many, many plants and dared anybody to get close to them. If you would even touch her plants, she would yell, “GET AWAY
FROM MY PLANTS!!!”

Preceding her in death were her parents, Reverend Roosevelt Sr. and Emma Washington; husband, Robert Guice; and brothers, Roosevelt Washington, Jr., Henry Washington, and Edmond
Washington.

She leaves to cherish her memories: three children, Garland (Flora) Washington of Vicksburg, Mississippi, Steve Washington, and Sandra Guice of Tallulah, Louisiana; seven grandchildren, including Oneka, Aissa, Cetera, and Melinda, and three special grandchildren, Jamie, Ki’Zandra, and Golden Jr., who were extremely helpful to her during her final days; eight great-grandchildren and one special great-grandaughter, Ki’Zaria, who was at her bedside daily until her passing; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
