The Life of Ethel Lee Perkins
She was our light, the center of our
universe, and all eyes looked to her.
The Matriarch
Ethel Lee Perkins-Berry
Ethel Lee Perkins-Berry was the tenth of eleven children born to Ezekiel and Addie Vaughn Perkins in Mangham, Louisiana. She accepted Christ at an early age at China Grove Baptist Church. In her later years, she became a deaconess and served until her health began to fail. After her health began to fail, her daughter moved her to Monroe, and she became a member of the Friendship Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Jessie McCoy, her brother-in-law. Mrs. Berry had a driving desire to get her education.
She graduated from Alto High School. She received her B. S. in Elementary Education and a Master’s in Sport Administration from Grambling State University. She later married the love of her life, Dr. Isam Berry, Sr., and they became a blended family.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Ezekiel and Addie Perkins; husband, Dr. Isam Berry, Sr.; daughter, Felicia Faye Berry; grandson, Damion Winn; and siblings, Richard Higgins, Allen Coleman, Alice Goodjoint, Joe Perkins, Easter Rose Perkins, Cresa Perkins-Small, Howard Perkins, Louis Perkins, and James Leo Perkins.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her two daughters, Joann Perkins-Winn (Terry) and Abbie Berry-Wilson (Kenneth); four sons, David Perkins (Lillie), Isam Berry, Jr. (Charlene), Daryll Berry (Seretha), and Roderick Berry; one sister, Dorothy Perkins- Hawkins; one brother-in-law, Pastor Jessie McCoy; one sister-in-law, Norcella McCoy; twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
