It was a hot, summer day in 1967 in Monroe, Louisiana, the second day of July, when God blessed the late Eddie and Eunice Garrett with their third child. This was their first and only son, so he was destined to be Eddie, Jr. but quickly became known as “Lil Ed” to his family.
Eddie accepted Christ at an early age. He attended New Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, and later became a member of Goodland in Monroe, Louisiana, under the leadership of Pastor George Coleman.
He attended school in the Morehouse Parish school system where he graduated from Bastrop High School, Class of 1985. After high school, Lil Ed immediately joined the workforce. He was not only a respectful, humble, and gentle soul but also a dedicated and hardworking one. He was employed with Jordache Jeans until its closing and a devoted officer for the Morehouse Parish Sheriff’s Office for 20 years until his retirement.
Before becoming the World’s Greatest Dad and Paw-Paw, he was the Best Uncle to Tara, Cree, and Indy. In 1989, Lil Ed’s first heiress, Jasmine, was born. A lot of love and memories were created at 1211 Henry Avenue.
On February 26, 2000, Eddie married the apple of his eye, Brenda Jean Ross. To that union, a bouncing baby boy was added, Arontae. Eddie enjoyed listening to Prince, fishing, and was the New England Patriots’ biggest fan. Eddie’s greatest joy was spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren.
On December 2, 2024, he departed this life. Eddie was preceded in death by his parents, Eddie and Eunice Garrett, Sr.; grandparents, Joe and Annie Givens, Sr., and Lewis and Rehonna Garrett; and father-in-law, James Ross, Sr.
He leaves his beloved memories to be forever cherished by his loving and devoted wife, Brenda Garrett; daughter, Jasmine Dowles; son, Arontae Garrett; three grandchildren, “The Triple J’s,” Jaycee and Jayceon Dowles and James Mathis; stepmom, Ella Garrett; two sisters, Patricia (Hance) Coleman and Janet (Lorenza) Causey; stepbrother, Melvin Keys, Jr.; mother-in-law, Mary Ross; three sisters-in-law, Beverly, Sandra, and Penny Ross; one brother-in-law, James (Shandra) Ross, Jr.; one special uncle, Bobby Givens; two special aunts, Dorothy Thaxton and Peola Johnson; best friend/brother, Thomas Crowder; special cousin, Carl Givens; and a plethora of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and other extended family, and friends.
