Charles Micheal Jefferson, born on August 21, 1956, was the youngest of fifteen children born to the late Bobby and Sarah Jefferson in Monroe, Louisiana. As the baby of the family, Charles grew up when most of his siblings were already grown and had le home. Though they were out of sight, he was never short of companionship, surrounded by nieces, nephews, and cousins who were close in age, filling his childhood with vibrant family connections.
Charles began his academic journey at Swayze Elementary School in Monroe, where he attended grades 1 through 7. In 1968, the era of integration brought him to Ouachita Junior High School. Those were challenging times, marked by societal shifts, yet they helped shape his resilience. The following year, he transferred to Richwood High School in Richwood, Louisiana, where he graduated with his high school diploma, ready to step into the world with determination.
Instead of college, Charles chose a path of hard work and dedication, primarily building his career with State Farm Insurance Company in Monroe, Louisiana. Though “health issues” eventually forced him to step back, his time there left lasting memories. And yes, family, we all know the stories from that chapter, C’mon.
Charles embarked on his spiritual journey early, baptized at Clear Lake in Rhymes, Louisiana, under the guidance of the late Reverend J. H. Housely. He was a devoted attendee of Sunday School and worship services at St. Joe Baptist Church in Rhymes, where his faith grew strong and steady.
If you knew Charles, you knew his words. Phrases like “My fault” “Cuz,” and “C’mon, Playa” were woven into his everyday conversations. His expressions and humor were unforgettable, traits that made every interaction with him a lively one. Markisha, Kendra, Jerel – know that your dad cherished you deeply. Though he sometimes struggled to put it into words, his love for you was always steadfast. You were, without question, at the center of his world.
To the family, Charles was a proud advocate for unity, constantly expressing his hopes for a stronger family bond. He knew there were challenges, but to him, family was family, flaws and all. As we bid farewell to “Cuz”, let us remember that he truly lived a full life. And when you need a good laugh, just think of those “coupons” and those “blue demons” Only family will understand... Oh, my fault.
Charles is survived by his three beloved children: Markisha Whitfield and Kendra Jefferson, both residing in Seattle, Washington, and Jerel Jefferson, who lives in Atlanta, Georgia. He also leaves behind his grandson, Mason Whitfield, in Seattle, and his former spouse and caregiver in his twilight moments, Carolyn Johnson, who resides in Seattle, Washington. To all that loved him, he will truly be missed. God has him now. I can hear him now saying,
“C’mon playa, you already know.”
