Remembering the Life of Carl Dewayne Calloway, Sr.

Carl Dewayne Calloway, Sr., was born April 1, 1965, in Monroe, Louisiana, to the late Will Washington and Mary Calloway Wade. He was affectionately known as “CC” by his friends and family. He accepted Christ at an early age where he united with Mt. Sinai Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend James Tolliver. Carl was baptized and joined the Junior Choir and later became a member of the Newly Established Togetherness Choir.

Carl’s education began at an early age at Lincoln Elementary School. Due to integration he was later transferred to Sherrouse Elementary School, where he continued his secondary education at Carroll Junior High School, Lee Junior High School, Neville Senior High School then finally Carroll Senior High School. Carl played football at Carroll under direction of late head coach Phillip Payne, wide receiver coach the late Eddie Robertson Jr. and the late defensive coach Julius Gray. He was also the All-District Wide Receiver in 1984. Carl Dewayne Calloway graduated from Carroll Senior High School, Class of 1984. He was recruited by the late coach Eddie Robertson, Sr., and the late Eddie Robertson, Jr., to play at Grambling State University. Carl also played with Patrick Taylor who is the present principal of Carroll Senior High School. Carl D.Calloway continued to be an advocate for Carroll High School and the Community. He was also a devoted member of the Carroll High School Alumni. When it came to his family and friends, he always had such a giving heart to anyone in need.

His greatest pride was becoming a father and grandfather, always willing to give advice when needed and sometimes when not. On August 14, 2023, Carl Dewayne Calloway, Sr., heard God say. Well done, good and faithful servant. He closed his eyes and stepped in eternity, knowing that those who had gone before him were welcoming him home. There to greet him was his father, Will Washington; mother, Mary Calloway Wade; brothers, Joseph Wade, Archie Wade, Thomas Wade, Larry Wade, Robert Lee Washington, and Lem Wade; sisters, Hattie Bee Brown, Rosie Lee Wheeler, and Caroline Wade; and granddaughter, Nevaeh Spruill.
