Forever in Our Hearts
Remembering Augustus Maxwell, Sr.
Life’s Beginning
On December 6, 1944, Ernestine Mayweather gave birth to Augustus Maxwell in Shreveport, Louisiana. He was raised in Monroe, Louisiana, with his father, Elgin Sr., alongside his five brothers, Kirby, Earl, Cliff, Elgin Jr., and Charles, and two sisters, Arlene and Cynthia. As a kid, he loved swimming in the river, playing with his siblings, and fishing. Fishing is something he loved throughout the years. He consistently stayed in mischief and was always up to something; if you asked his auntie she would say he was bad. Augustus would eat fast; he said growing up with a lot of siblings, you had to. Augustus had so many tricks up his sleeve, from taking socks, borrowing cars to joyride, all the way to altering tests. If he didn’t tell you, he didn’t want you to know. Augustus and his relatives stayed outside and gained so many memories to tell the tale. If it wasn’t one thing it was another.
Life’s Journey
Augustus graduated high school. He had many different jobs, but his career and retirement was at Avery Dennison. Augustus was a humorous man who loved to joke and make witty remarks. His comebacks were remarkable; we all know he stayed quick on his toes. If there’s one thing that Augustus loved to do in his pastime, it was spending time with his wife, Rosie, watching TV listening to YouTube. And loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and family. He loved to fish and to do anything in the water; he loved going across the river. Augustus had a green thumb since anyone could remember, because he kept a garden or greenhouse. In every house he lived and in some places he visited, he had to have vegetation and beautiful flowers. Even if he had to plant them himself, he loved it. His last residence has his hands and hard work flourishing with tomatoes, strawberries, and roses. Augustus most definitely was always strong, caring, giving, hardworking, full of jokes and laughs, and a family man. He would definitely teach you a thing or two.
Life’s End
Augustus didn’t let nothing stop him from doing what he needed or wanted; he may have slowed down but he did not ever stop, give up, or let anyone tell him what he couldn’t do. If we let him have his way, he would tell you he was building his strength so he could get on the motorcycle in the garage. Augustus stayed in his favorite rocking chair watching the wildlife and blooming vegetation, listening to the many calls of the wild, and enjoying the heat. If he had it his way, he would lay in bed all day listening to music, watching television, and playing solitaire or casino games on his phone, all the while waiting for food to be brought to him. Now Augustus can rest with his mother and brothers. Augustus passed away on June 28, 2024 in Germantown, Tennessee. Augustus was preceded in death by his loving mother, Ernestine; father, Elgin; and five brothers, Elgin, Kirby, Charles, Earl, and Cliff. His legacy of love lives on through: wife, Rosie Maxwell; son, Augustus Maxwell Jr.; and daughters, Lashawn Maxwell, Yolanda Carter, Sirlena Rahmani, and Shirley Ann Maxwell
